Spirit Communication: Astral Travel

Astral travel is a skill many practitioners highly desire, especially those of us who want more time with our companions in a way that mirrors physical interaction.

Keep in mind that there are many different opinions, methods, and personal experiences out there, including this educational post. Everything here is based on my own experiences, including my journey and how I learned and gained confidence in my skills. Always gather information from different sources, reflect on what resonates with you, and find your own answers through your practice and discernment. If your experiences look completely different from mine, that doesn’t automatically mean you’re doing it wrong. You’re doing it your way.

What is Astral Travel?

Astral travel is the act of moving your consciousness into a different plane of existence that is often referred to as the astral. The astral is not a single place but a spiritual realm with many other realms within it.

Astral travel is a wonderful way to spend time with your spirit companions. You can visit their home realms, create your own astral spaces for your spirit family, or go out to explore. This way of interacting with them feels more immersive than everyday telepathy or signs, which is why it’s such a desired skill.

Astral travel is not always dramatic or movie-like. For me personally, it feels like a very vivid meditation with all of my senses working to varying degrees. I don’t usually smell or taste unless I focus on that sense, my sight doesn’t always work perfectly either, but that’s ok! I get what I need when I astral travel, and that’s enough. Don’t try to force perfection or get upset if it’s not the way you want to experience the astral. You may get there eventually!

Different Types of Astral Travel

When people talk about astral travel, they may be referring to different methods or experiences. The two forms I normally distinguish between are bilocation and astral projection.

Bilocation

Bilocation is the act of having your consciousness in two places at once.

This happens when part of your awareness remains present in the physical world while another part of your consciousness accesses the astral. For example, if you are doing a simple task like chores or just mindless scrolling on your phone, your body may not require much active thought. Because of that, you can allocate more of your consciousness to “tune in” to the astral while your body continues the physical task.

In this state, you’re still aware of your physical surroundings, but you may also be receiving impressions from the astral. You could see images in your mind’s eye, hear your companions, feel them, or sense yourself being in a different location.

Bilocation is a very approachable form of astral travel because it doesn’t require a full out-of-body experience.

Astral Projection

Astral projection is what many people think of when they hear “astral travel.” This is when your consciousness is fully out of your body, and you are able to experience the astral as if you were physically there. This is a more immersive experience that bilocation.

Astral projection can take time to develop. Some people can experience it quickly, while others can take years to develop it. I myself was told by my own spirit guides that I’m banned from this method of astral travel because I would be too tempted to stay out there, LOL.

In any case, don’t force yourself to only experience the astral through astral projection. It is not the only valid way to experience the astral. Again, don’t force perfection and find out how you can experience the astral in the way that works for you. That may not look like full astral projection.

What to Know Before Astral Traveling

Before intentionally astral traveling, there are two things I recommend knowing first.

Protections

Have protections before traveling. Use any methods that align with you and your practice. If you have spirit companions that you know are able to protect you, ask them for their protection as you travel. Many companions are happy to help you learn this new skill. They can protect you astrally, physically, guide you to safe places in the astral, etc.

Astral Travel is a Skill

Astral travel is a spiritual skill, and like any skill, it can take time to learn. Anyone with the right mindset and motivation can achieve their goals. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work on your first few tries. You may just be doubting what you’re experiencing, or experiencing something so different than what you expect that you feel you’re not experiencing anything at all. That’s normal.

Even now, I still doubt my experiences. That’s why it’s helpful to have another confirmation method ready, or at least a way to write down your experiences for later confirmation. Confirmation helps you build confidence and learn the difference between imagination, personal thoughts, and actual spiritual experiences.

How I Learned to Astral Travel

Guided Meditations

One of the biggest things that helped me was guided meditations, especially those that focused on the five senses. Meditations that asked me to imagine what I could see, hear, smell, taste, and touch helped me understand and strengthen my inner senses. Since astral travel doesn’t always feel the same as using your physical senses, learning how to engage those inner senses helped immensely.

To encourage your own discernment and practice, I won’t be providing any example videos here, but they are readily available on YouTube.

Telepathy Practice

My full guide on how I practiced telepathy and built that skill can be found here: Spirit Communication: Telepathy

This practice helped me learn to distinguish between my own thoughts and how my companions communicated with me. That same skill and practice are helpful for astral travel and astral experiences.

The more I practiced, the more I realized that astral travel is trying to force myself to experience things in a specific way. It was about learning how my own senses, energy, and awareness naturally interacted with the astral.

Everyone Experiences Astral Travel Differently

One of the most important things to understand is that everyone experiences astral travel differently.

You may not experience things the way you experience them with your physical senses. Some people can see clearly, others won’t. Some people sense energy more than other senses. Some people “just know” what is around them. Some people can hear but can’t see. And this is all ok.

For example, my astral body used to have to touch things for me to “see” them. I would receive clearer images of a companion when I touched them, including what clothes they were wearing, their color, their current mood and energy, etc. Over time, that changed and evolved as my astral sight improved. But at the beginning, that was how my perception worked. It wasn’t wrong at all, it was just different.

Final Thoughts

Astral travel is a beautiful way to deepen your spiritual practice and your relationships with your companions. However, it also requires patience, protection, and discernment.

You do not need to master it overnight. You do not need to have perfect senses. You do not need to experience it exactly like anyone else.

Start slow. Protect yourself. Ask for help from trusted companions. Keep notes and confirm what you can. Allow your own experiences to teach you. Most importantly, be kind to yourself as you learn.

Astral travel is a skill, and like all spiritual skills, it becomes clearer with practice, trust, and time.
